Which Athens Metro Ticket Should You Buy? 2026 Decision Guide

You have probably already found the Athens fares: single €1.20, day pass €4.10, 5-day pass €8.20. The prices are the easy part. The real question — the one that actually decides whether you overpay — is which of them you should tap in with for the trip you are taking. This guide answers that, fast, based on how long you are staying and how much you will actually ride.

The one rule that decides everything: how many rides per day?

Forget passes for a second. A single Athens ticket is €1.20 and lasts 90 minutes with unlimited transfers — so one “ride” often covers a there-and-back hop if you are quick. The 24-hour pass is €4.10. Divide one by the other and you get the only number you need to remember:

Estimates use standard adult fares. A single ticket lasts 90 minutes with free transfers, so a quick out-and-back can count as one ride. See the full Athens fare breakdown for reduced fares and where to buy.

Should you bother with a pass at all? (Tap to Ride changes the math)

Athens lets you tap a contactless card or phone directly at the validator and charges the €1.20 fare automatically — no ticket to buy or carry. For short stays with light, unpredictable travel, this is often the smartest choice: you only pay for what you actually ride, and there is no risk of buying a pass you do not use. Better still, tapping is capped: OASA never charges more than €4.10 a day (the price of a 24-hour ticket) for urban journeys, however many times you ride — so on any single day you cannot pay more than the day pass. Tapping also works for the airport: €9.00 on the airport metro and €5.50 on the airport express buses. Two things to know: always tap with the same card or device (switching between phone and watch breaks the cap and can double-charge you), and over several days of heavy riding the €8.20 5-day ticket still beats paying up to €4.10 every day.

Quick answers

Which Athens metro ticket should I buy?

Four or more rides in a day → 24-hour pass (€4.10). Three or more days with 7+ rides in total → 5-day pass (€8.20). Just a ride or two → singles at €1.20, or simply tap a contactless card (capped at €4.10 a day). Anything touching the airport → a separate airport ticket on top, unless you choose the €20.00 3-day tourist ticket.

Is the day pass worth it?

It breaks even at 4 rides (4 × €1.20 = €4.80 vs the €4.10 pass). Expecting 4+ rides in a day? Worth it. Fewer than that, stick with singles.

Does any pass include the airport?

Only the €20.00 combined 3-day pass. The 24-hour and 5-day passes do not — the airport is a separate zone needing a dedicated €9.00 ticket.
