Barcelona T-usual vs T-casual 2026: The 50% Discount Tourists Miss

Barcelona T-usual vs T-casual 2026

Most visitors to Barcelona buy the wrong ticket. They reach for the T-casual, the famous 10-trip card that every English-language guide calls “the tourist ticket,” and they pay full price for it. What almost nobody tells you is that a different card currently costs 50% less (the discount is set each year and is confirmed for 2026), and for a stay of four days or more it often works out cheaper. This guide explains the one pricing rule that quietly saves money in 2026, and exactly when each card wins.

The 2026 prices at a glance

From the start of 2026, Barcelona’s single fares rose across the board, but one important discount was kept in place. Here is what each option costs in Zone 1, which covers the entire city for almost every visitor.

Ticket Price (Zone 1) What you get Discounted?
Single ticket €2.90 One journey, no transfers No
T-casual (10 trips) €13.00 10 single journeys, one person No
T-usual (monthly) €22.80 Unlimited travel for 30 days incl. airport metro, one person Yes — already 50% off
T-jove (under 30) €45.50 Unlimited travel for 90 days, one person Yes — already 50% off

The rule nobody explains: the 50% discount only applies to some cards

This is the part that trips people up. In 2026 the Catalan transport authority kept a 50% subsidy on its main travel passes, but it does not apply to every ticket. The discount covers the T-usual and the T-jove, plus the social fares for large families, single-parent families and the unemployed. It does not cover the single ticket or the T-casual.

The fare authority (ATM) confirmed the 50% discount on the T-usual and T-jove for the whole of 2026, so the headline price of €22.80 is already the discounted figure. Discounts are reviewed every year, so check the price again if you are travelling in 2027.

Why the “monthly” card can beat the “tourist” card

The T-usual is sold as a 30-day unlimited pass, so most visitors dismiss it instantly: why buy a month when you are here for a long weekend? But the maths is not about how long the card lasts. It is about how many rides you take.

Both cards need a T-mobilitat support the first time; the cheapest is the €1 cardboard card. Your first T-casual costs €14 (€13 + €1 card) for 10 journeys. For a few extra trips you do not need a second pack: single tickets at €2.90 are cheaper (11 journeys = €16.90, 12 = €19.70, 13 = €22.60). A T-usual on a cardboard card costs €23.80 (€22.80 + €1) for unlimited travel for 30 days. So without the airport, the T-usual is cheaper from your 14th journey (a T-casual plus four singles would cost €25.60). Single tickets do not include transfers, so if your extra trips need a change, the T-usual pays off sooner. And because the T-usual also covers the airport metro (worth €11.80 for a return), it wins from about your 5th journey if you will ride L9 Sud to and from the airport. A traveller doing three trips a day passes 14 journeys on day five.

So the decision is not “tourist card versus local card.” It is simply: how many rides will I actually take?

Which ticket should you buy?

  • Staying 1–3 days, light use: single tickets at €2.90 for up to four rides; a T-familiar (€11.50 + €1 card, 8 journeys) for five to eight — one person can use it too; a T-casual for nine or ten.
  • Staying 3–5 days, moderate use: a T-familiar covers up to 8 journeys and a T-casual (€13.00) up to 10; beyond that add single tickets, or switch to the T-usual from about 14 journeys. The T-casual is one card per person; the T-familiar can be used alone or shared.
  • 11 or more journeys in total — or any stay using the airport metro both ways: the T-usual (€22.80 + €1 card) wins — but remember it is strictly one person.
  • Under 30 and staying a while: the T-jove at €45.50 covers 90 days of unlimited travel and is also half price.

One catch to remember: the airport

The single ticket and the T-casual are not valid at the Aeroport T1 and T2 stations on the L9 Sud metro line — that journey needs a dedicated airport ticket, priced at €5.90 one way in 2026. The T-usual and T-jove, by contrast, are valid at the airport metro stations, which makes them even better value if you would otherwise buy two airport tickets (€11.80 return). The Hola Barcelona travel card also includes one airport metro journey in each direction.

Travelling as a couple or family? Neither card is shareable

Both the T-usual and the T-casual are single-person tickets: TMB classifies the T-casual as one person per card, and the T-usual is personal and non-transferable. If you want one card for several people, the option is the T-familiar — a multi-person ticket with 8 journeys in 30 days (from €11.50 in Zone 1). It is also the cheapest option for one person making 5 to 8 journeys (€12.50 with the €1 card, against €14 for a first T-casual), and for a couple taking only a handful of trips. Like the T-casual, it is not valid at the airport metro stations.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Barcelona T-usual discount going to end in 2026?
No. The ATM confirmed the 50% discount on the T-usual and T-jove for all of 2026. The €22.80 price already reflects it.

Does the 50% discount apply to the T-casual?
No. The discount covers the T-usual, T-jove and certain social fares only. The single ticket and the T-casual are charged at full price.

How many rides until the T-usual is cheaper than the T-casual?
From the 14th journey, if you are not using the airport metro. Ten journeys on a T-casual cost €14 including the €1 card; for journeys 11 to 13, adding single tickets (€2.90 each, no transfers) is still cheaper than a T-usual at €23.80. If your extra trips need transfers, or you will take the airport metro both ways, the T-usual is cheaper much sooner — from about the 5th journey with the airport.

Can two people share a T-usual?
No. The T-usual is strictly for one person — and so is the T-casual. If you want a shareable card, the multi-person T-familiar (8 journeys in 30 days) is the one that can be used by more than one traveller.

Do any of these cards cover the airport metro?
Some do. The T-usual and T-jove are valid at the Aeroport T1 and T2 metro stations on L9 Sud. The single ticket and the T-casual are not — with those you need a separate airport ticket (€5.90 one way). The Hola Barcelona travel card includes one airport metro trip each way.
