What tapping your bank card or phone actually buys on Barcelona’s metro and buses — and where it doesn’t work.
How paying by bank card works in Barcelona
Barcelona does not have a tap-in/tap-out system like London. When you tap your bank card, the reader buys and validates a single ticket in one step. There is no paper ticket; your purchase history and invoices are available on TMB’s bank card ticket website.
- Metro: only at the special bank card machines located at some metro entrances — not at every gate. The ticket is valid for one metro journey within two hours of validation.
- TMB buses: tap the bank card reader next to the driver. The ticket is valid only on that bus, from where you board to the end of the route.
- Price: €2.90 per journey (standard single fare, 2026).
- Cards accepted: Visa, Mastercard and American Express, as a physical card, on a phone or on a smartwatch.
- Travelling together: tap once per person. If three of you are travelling, hold the card to the reader three times.
Bank card vs T-casual — which is cheaper?
| Option | Cost | Transfers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank card single (tap) | €2.90 per journey | None | 1–4 journeys in total |
| T-casual (10 journeys, Zone 1) | €13.00 (€1.30 per journey) + €1 for a cardboard T-mobilitat card the first time | Metro, bus, tram, FGC and Rodalies within 1 h 15 min (up to 3 transfers) | 9–13 journeys (add single tickets from the 11th) |
| T-familiar (8 journeys, 30 days) | €11.50 + €1 card the first time; one person can use it, or share it | Integrated, same rules | 5–8 journeys — alone or shared |
The verdict
A first T-familiar costs €12.50 (€11.50 + €1 card) for 8 journeys. Four single taps cost €11.60; five cost €14.50. So from your fifth journey a T-familiar is cheaper — it is sold as a multi-person ticket, but one person can use it too. For 9 or 10 journeys the T-casual (€14 with the card) is the better buy, and any travel card beats single taps if a trip needs a metro-to-bus connection. Neither is valid at the airport metro stations.
Which ticket should you buy?
| If you… | Buy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| make 1–4 journeys and don’t take the metro to the airport | Bank card taps | €2.90 per journey |
| make 5–8 journeys (alone, or shared by a group) | T-familiar | €11.50 + €1 card the first time (8 journeys, 30 days) |
| make 9–10 journeys | T-casual | €13 + €1 card the first time |
| take the metro to or from the airport and travel a lot for 1–5 days | Hola Barcelona Travel Card | From €12.50 (24 h) on the official site; includes one airport metro trip each way |
| travel alone and make 11–13 journeys | T-casual + single tickets | €14 + €2.90 per extra journey (singles include no transfers) |
| make 14+ journeys in 30 days, or take the airport metro both ways and make about 5+ journeys | T-usual | See T-usual vs T-casual |
The airport: bank card singles do not work on L9 Sud
The metro single ticket (including one bought by bank card) is not valid at the Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 stations on line L9 Sud. For the airport metro you need the Airport ticket (€5.90), a travel card that includes the airport such as the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, or a T-usual. The T-casual is not valid at these stations either.
Where else bank card payment does not apply
The bank card system described above is TMB’s (metro and TMB buses). Trams (TRAM), FGC trains and Rodalies regional trains are part of the same integrated fare system, so the T-casual and other integrated tickets work on them — but we could not confirm bank card tap-to-pay on these services from their official sources, so do not rely on it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my contactless card on the Barcelona metro?
Yes, but only at the special bank card machines at some metro entrances. Each tap buys a €2.90 single ticket valid for one metro journey within two hours.
Do I get free transfers when I pay by bank card?
No. A bank card ticket covers one journey only: metro-only on the metro, or that single bus route on a bus. For transfers, use an integrated ticket such as the T-casual (1 h 15 min, up to 3 transfers in Zone 1).
Is there a daily cap for contactless payments in Barcelona?
No. Every tap buys another €2.90 single ticket. If you will make five or more journeys, a T-familiar (5–8 journeys) or a T-casual (9–10) works out cheaper.
Can two people pay with one bank card?
Yes — tap the card once for each person travelling. Each tap buys a separate single ticket.
Can I pay by bank card for the airport metro?
Not with a bank card single: it is not valid at the Aeroport T1 and T2 stations on L9 Sud. You need the €5.90 Airport ticket, or a card that includes the airport such as Hola Barcelona or the T-usual.
