Tap to Ride Athens: How to Use Contactless Payments on Metro & Buses
Visiting the Greek capital in 2026? You no longer need to worry about finding ticket kiosks, dealing with small change, or figuring out complex zone maps. Athens has fully embraced the modern era with its “Tap to Ride” contactless payment system.
Whether you are hopping on the Metro to see the Acropolis or taking a bus down to the Riviera, paying for your ride is now as simple as using your phone or bank card. Here is everything you need to know about navigating Athens using contactless payments.
How “Tap & Pay” Works in Athens
The system is incredibly straightforward and works for almost everyone. You do not need to download a specific app or buy a physical transport card.
- What to look for: Simply look for the blue readers located at the Metro turnstiles, or inside the electric buses and trams.
- What to use: You can tap your physical contactless credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard) or use mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- The Fare: A standard “Tap to Ride” tap costs €1.20 and is valid for 90 minutes of unlimited transfers across the city network.
Crucial Rule: You must use the exact same card or device for every tap (e.g., don’t tap in with your iPhone and tap out with your physical Visa card), or the system will charge you twice. Also, remember that one card equals one traveler. You cannot tap the same card twice to pay for your partner.
The Daily Fare Cap (€4.10)
One of the best features of the Athens contactless system is the automatic daily capping. If you are exploring the city and tapping your card all day, the system will never charge you more than €4.10 (the price of a 24-hour daily pass). Once you hit that amount, the rest of your rides for the day are completely free!
The ATH.ENA Go App: Android vs. iPhone
If you prefer to buy digital tickets instead of tapping your bank card directly, Athens offers the ATH.ENA Go App. However, functionality varies heavily depending on your smartphone:
- Android Users: You can use your phone as a digital ticket via the app. You buy the ticket in the app, ensure your NFC is turned on, and hold your phone screen to the gate to enter. (Tip: If the gate doesn’t react, try removing your phone case).
- iPhone Users: While you can easily tap to enter the gates using Apple Pay (linked to your bank card), the ATH.ENA Go app itself cannot act as a digital ticket. You can only use the app to reload a physical plastic/paper card by holding it to the back of your phone.
Ready to Explore Athens?
Now that you know exactly how to pay for your rides, you need to know where you are going! The “Tap to Ride” system is perfect for the city center, but for the airport remember that the €1.20 fare does not apply: a tap still works, but it is charged at the airport fare (€9.00 on the metro, €5.50 on the express buses). Also check the fixed-rate taxi rules.
